Animal keepers ZooParc Overloon in action for giraffes
ZooParc Overloon zookeepers are cycling 485 km for the protection of giraffes in the wild during the weekend of August 25, 26 and 27. The arrival of 3 net giraffes to ZooParc Overloon is a great opportunity to draw attention to the ever-growing threat to wild giraffes.
Endangered speciesRecently, 3 net giraffes moved into ZooParc Overloon. Subira, Limber and Naomi came from different European zoos and will hopefully provide offspring in ZooParc Overloon in a while.
In the wild, however, giraffes are not doing well. In the past 30 years, the population of giraffes in the wild has declined from 160,000 to 97,500 animals. The rapid population decline is caused by the increasing influence of humans in the giraffe's natural habitat. Wars, poaching, road building and mining industries are reducing the space available to the giraffes.

To draw more attention to the threat of giraffes in the wild, ZooParc Overloon is organizing twilight tours and the zookeepers get on their bikes to raise money for the protection of giraffes. During the weekend of August 25, 26 and 27, the zookeepers will cycle a whopping 485 km from ZooParc Overloon to Zoo Magdenburg in Germany. The distance of 485 kilometers was arrived at by adding up the average length of all giraffes still living in the wild. This may seem like a considerable distance, but if you add up the average length of all the people in the world, you come to 12,250,000 kilometers!
