ZooParc Overloon may welcome five new cheetahs from France
Overloon, March 26, 2020 - ZooParc in Overloon has welcomed five new cheetahs. Mother Asali and her four children arrived in the Brabant park from France a few days ago. After a short settling-in period, they are now allowed to explore their outdoor enclosure.
Asali (age 8) and her three daughters (age 4) and son (age 5) moved to the Netherlands from the French Reserve Africaine de Sigean as part of the European breeding program. "They were looking for and new place where they can stay together as a family and we have the perfect space for that," says general manager Roel Huibers. "And we are very happy to have a group of cheetahs in our midst again."
Breeding ProgramKianga, the former resident of the cheetah enclosure, has just moved to the south of France as part of the same breeding program. "They are going to see if she can have another litter there," Huibers said.
The cheetah is native to Africa and Asia and can reach speeds of 120 kilometers per hour. The cheetah, as this hunter is also known in Dutch, mainly eats medium-sized ungulates such as gazelles, impalas and waterbucks.
Due to habitat reduction and hunting by humans, the number of cheetahs living in the wild has been greatly reduced and the cheetah is among the endangered species.
