New theme area: Itampolo
In the summer of 2019, a completely new themed area opened at ZooParc: Itampolo! In this area, you will come face to face with prosimians and fossas.
The half-monkey island was already a household name in ZooParc. This is where you walked among the ring-tailed lemurs back then. This time, the ring-tailed lemurs will be moved to a whole new, and larger, walk-through area: Itampolo! You will soon find not only ring-tailed lemurs here. The new area will soon be home to:
Ring-tailed lemurs
Colorful variety
Alaotra bamboo lemurs
Fossas
The new area is a walk-through area. The prosimians sit together on a large island where you as a visitor can walk. So you will be surrounded by the prosimians! Feeding presentations will also take place in this area.
Will you come and watch too?
Itampolo consists of two parts.
The new area consists of two parts. One part is the island where the prosimians can be found. Here you can walk among the prosimians as a ZooParc visitor. For the second part of Itampolo something else applies. This is where fossas can be found. Fossas are real carnivores and mainly hunt lemurs. Therefore, the second part of Itampolo consists of an enclosure for the fossas. You can see both the enclosure and the fossa cave from different points.
Below you can see the new prosimian island on the left. On the right, you can see the new fossa enclosure.
New species: the fossa
The fossas(Cryptoprocta ferox) are a new species in ZooParc. And not only in ZooParc. They are also a new species in the Netherlands. There are only about 25 zoos in the whole of Europe with fossas.
Fossas are predators. In fact, they primarily hunt ring-tailed lemurs! Fossas look like cats, but they are definitely not felines. They belong in their own group. Their closest relatives are the mongooses.
