  • Long toes

The puna ibis mainly eats aquatic animals, worms and snails. With its long, narrow beak, it pricks them out of the shallow water. To find food, the puna ibis must therefore walk through the mud a lot. To make sure he does not sink in the mud, the ibis has extra long toes. With these, it can even walk over floating leaves.

    High and dry

Many ibises build their nest in a tree. But the puna ibis lives high in the mountains, where there are few trees. So it builds its nest in the reeds or in the water. He stacks twigs and leaves on top of each other until the nest sticks out quite a bit above the water. This keeps the eggs and young safe from predators and prevents them from getting their feet wet.
