Koi carp do not occur in the wild. They were bred long ago in Japan. There are now more than 20 different species with all kinds of different colors. In Japan, koi carp symbolize wealth, love and happiness.
In the mating season, a female sometimes lays more than 100,000 eggs. The eggs are no larger than 2 millimeters. The male swims over the eggs and fertilizes them. After just a few days, the eggs hatch. Newborn koi carp are very vulnerable. Many young do not survive the first weeks of their lives. In fact, they are often eaten by adult koi carp.
