The Darwin's nandu has wings but cannot fly. The wings the nandu uses while running to make sharp turns. This comes in handy when the nandu needs to flee. The nandu also has a sharp claw at the end of each wing. This allows the bird to defend itself.
Darwin's nandos usually live in a group of between 5 and 30 birds. During the breeding season, the males go to their own territory where they make a nest. When the nest is ready, the male mates with several females. The females lay their eggs in or around the nest. The male rolls the eggs into the nest and incubates them.
