Barking Deer

When the muntjac is in danger, it remains dead still and makes a barking sound. This "distress call" is an expression of fear. Thanks to this sound, the muntjac is also called a "barking deer.

Male muntjaks have remarkably long canines that they use during fighting. Both males and females mark their territory with fluid that comes from a scent gland near the eyes.
