Extraordinary: visitors see camel born at ZooParc Overloon

Visitors to ZooParc were treated to a special event during its opening week: the birth of a camel. The little animal came into the world while visitors to the zoo in Overloon were watching. The foal is doing well: mother Mosi is taking good care of her newborn son.

"The little camel was born in the middle of the day, in the outdoor enclosure. So visitors really witnessed it. That is unique and very special to witness," says Roel Huibers, general manager of ZooParc.

On your own two feetThe little one is born after a gestation period of about thirteen months. A camel foal can stand on its own legs after only a few hours, and after a few days the young animal goes out with its mother.

Camels occur naturally in Central Asia, in Mongolia and north of the Himalayas, but they mainly live in the Gobi Desert. It is one of the largest mammals that can survive in the desert. Due to ever-shrinking habitat and hunting, the camel has become an endangered species.
